They are works of fiction. By works of fiction I mean they are novels written at different times but also share other peculiar characteristics which is – they were adapted into a movie, they made huge box office returns, they were successful pieces of art.

Pastor Disguised As Destitute To Church

American Pastor,  Jeremiah Steepek transformed himself into a homeless person and went to the 10,000 member church that he was to be introduced as the head pastor at that morning.

He walked around his soon to be church for 30 minutes while it was filling with people for service, only 3 people out of the about 10,000 people said hello to him.

He asked people for change to buy food – no one in the church gave him change.

He went into the sanctuary to sit down in the front of the church and was asked by the ushers if he would please sit in the back.

Farmers Database To Hit 20mn By 2015

In order to increase the economic viability of agricbusiness in Nigeria, government says it hopes to capture 20million farmers in its database by 2015.

Presently, there are over 10million farmers in government's database nationwide.

Agriculture Minister, Mr. Adesina Akinwummi who disclosed this in Abuja said that with the new focus of government, it is essential that agriculture is practiced as business stressing that  "it is no longer what it used to be."

Director Extension Service, Mr. Bamidele Anieju, who represented the Agriculture Minister said that "Government is doing everything to ensure that Nigeria is transformed from being reliant on oil as a major source of Income."

The Coordinator of the Nigeria Centenary Exhibition, Mr. Okundaye Obhiozele noted that increased Foreign Direct Investment inflows into the country coupled with ongoing investments is an indication that Nigeria's economy is strong.
 

Two Killed, One Injured In Ibadan After 24-Hrs Of Non-Stop Rainfall

At least two persons have been confirmed dead and another injured following the non-stop rain that lasted for 24 hours on Monday in Ibadan.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs Bisi Ilobanafor, told said Tuesday in Ibadan that the incident occurred around 8.15a.m near Challenge Police Station.

Mrs. Ilobanafor said that one of the victims was a commercial motorcyclist while the other was an old man.

Pregnant Teenagers In Court, Kept In "Dehumanising" Conditions

Today, September 24, 2013, five young pregnant girls appeared before the Judge of the Umuahia Magistrates' Court. The teenagers were tried for allegedly conspiring to commit felony, as well as buying and selling  newborn babies.

The names of the teenagers are Blessing David, Chikodi Samuel, Goodluck Erondu, Miracle Ifeanyi, Mercy Dickson.

Happiness Chinemere, the sixth accused, did not appear in court, as she is currently at the Police Clinic in Umuahia.

27-Year-Old Man Breaks Into ATM, Steals N6.8 Million

The Police Command in the FCT have begun investigation into the alleged theft of N6.8 million from the ATM of a bank at Jabi District, Abuja, on Saturday.

DSP Altine Daniel, the command’s spokesperson, who disclosed this on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, said that a suspect had been arrested in connection with the theft.

He said that the 27-year-old suspect (name withheld), allegedly broke into the ATM belonging to one of the old generation banks and stole the money.

CBN Uncovers Massive Fraud In Consolidated Discount House

The Governor of Nigeria’s Central Bank (CBN), Mr. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, on Tuesday in Abuja disclosed that the Apex Bank uncovered massive fraud in the account books of Consolidated Discount House Ltd.

The CBN governor explained that CBN auditors were still investigating the books in order to determine the extent of the fraud, adding that within the next few weeks, appropriate action would be taken by the CBN.

“We discovered in books of Consolidated Discount House what appeared to be a massive fraud and misrepresentation of account. We have taken action.” 

Shell Declares ‘Force Majeure’ On Gas Supply To NLNG

Royal Dutch Shell has disclosed that its Shell Petroleum Development Co of Nigeria (SPDC) declared force majeure on gas supplied to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Co and on Bonny Light crude exports, effective September 23.

About 150,000 barrels of oil and 500 million standard cubic feet of gas per day have been deferred, it said in a release.

The SPDC declared force majeure after it shut down the Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP) for repair of new crude oil leaks caused by theft at Bodo West and Oloma.

Security Operatives Arrest 149 For Job Racketeering

No fewer than 149 persons, who specialise in employment racketeering, have been arrested by security agencies in the North-East.

The syndicate was said to have opened a Facebook Account in the name of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Alhaji Bukar Aji, and using it to extort innocent Nigerians.

The fraudsters promised their victims that would secure jobs for them after the payment of N2,000 for application form.

Homosexual Rapes Twelve Year Old Boy In Gombe

The Gombe State Police Command says it has arrested two persons suspected of homosexuality and another for rape.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr. Fwaje Atajiri, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Gombe.

Atajiri said a 25-year-old suspected homosexual, of Dubai by-pas, Gombe, had, penultimate Sunday, lured a seven-year-old boy to an uncompleted building, threatened him with a knife and raped him.

Significant Drop In New HIV Infections Recorded - UNAIDS

UNAIDS in its annual report released Monday disclosed that the number of new Human Immunodeficiency Virus cases dropped worldwide.

 According to the report, a 33 percent drop was experienced in the number of those that contracted the virus. This is a far cry from last year, where 2.3 million people were infected with the virus globally.

260,000 children were infected, more than a third fewer than in 2009 and 52 percent down from 2001.

Police arrest one-legged robber and rapist

The delta state police has arrested a 21-year-old disabled robbery suspect, John Okue in a hair salon in Okwashi-Uku, following a tip off.

The one-legged robber, who lost his leg to a virus, led the gang of other armed robbers whose ages ranged from about 17 to 25 years.

They were said to have robbed, killed and raped their female victims with impunity.

Drama In Court As Accused Resists Attempt To Return Him To Prison Custody

A mild drama ensued at the Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, on Monday, as an accused refused to go back to prison custody, after hearing in the suit filed against him by the police.

The accused, Sunny Mac-Peters, 28, a businessman from Kuchingoro Village, Abuja, told the court that he would not go back to prison custody, until his trial was concluded.

Mac-Peters went berserk after the Senior Magistrate, Mrs Grace Adebayo adjourned the matter.

Nursing Mother Nabbed Attempting To Export Cannabis

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday said that it had arrested a 34-year-old nursing mother (names withheld) for allegedly attempting to export 6 kg. of cannabis to China.

NDLEA Spokesman Mr Mitchell Ofoyeju,  said the suspect was arrested during a routine inspection of cargoes at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

He said that the cannabis was hidden in a luggage meant for export on an Ethiopian Airlines’ flight, adding that illicit drug was discovered at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) shed.

Catholic Priest Caught Sleeping With 15-Year-Old Boy

According to reports, a Catholic priest has been arrested for molesting a 15-year-old boy.

Police revealed that 56-year-old Father W. Jeffrey Paulish was caught in the act as they found the boy (who was not wearing pants) in a car on a University campus.

When he was caught, the priest initially said he was orking on his homily on campus when he met the boy, who he said was in emotional distress and needed counseling. Police say he later admitted that he met the teen through the “casual encounters” section of Craigslist.

The Group Managing Director, Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mr. Andrew Yakubu has reiterated that the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) by the National Assembly would revolutionise the Nigerian Oil and Gas industry.

The NNPC GMD who stated this in an interview in Abuja noted that the proposed PIB Act would separate policy, regulatory and commercial roles in the industry.

He said: “Specifically, the PIB envisages the creation of three National Oil Companies from the current NNPC. The current NNPC will be re-structured into NPDC, the Refineries, PPMC, NNPC Retail and other support service units. The unbundling of the NNPC into the National Asset Management Company, the National Gas Company and a vertically integrated National Oil Company with limited Upstream Assets may be viewed as encouraging competition as there is no restriction in law to the business that each of the companies could pursue in future.

Qatar 2022: UEFA Backs Winter World Cup

The 54 member federations of European governing body UEFA are unanimously in favour “in principle” of moving the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to a different time of the year, UEFA president Michel Platini confirmed on Friday.

The tournament, which is usually held in June and July, would run into scorching temperatures in Qatar and governing officials, including Platini and world governing boss Sepp Blatter, have entertained the idea of switching the tournament to what would be the European winter season.
 

African Union Calls Summit Over ICC pullout

The African Union (AU) has called a summit to discuss a mass withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC) in protest at the trial of Kenya's Deputy President William Ruto.

A letter sent to the ICC signed by African leaders says Mr Ruto's presence in The Hague will disadvantage Kenya.

The AU has previously accused the ICC of "hunting" African leaders and ignoring atrocities elsewhere.

Man Cuts Off Testicles, Delays Wedding

A couple’s wedding was delayed after a man allegedly cut off his testicles before storming into a church just an hour before the ceremony was to take place.

The Brentwood, U.K. man was taken to a hospital Saturday shortly after his self-mutilation, according to News.com.au. As a vicar and florist put finishing touches to the church, the unnamed man stormed in, throwing chairs around as he soaked the floor in his blood.

Thunder kills 4 persons in Nasarawa

Four persons were killed on Friday when Thunder struck at Mechanic Village in Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

An eyewitness said that the incident occurred at Bukan-Sidi around 7:05 p.m. when the four men were about leaving their workshop following a downpour.

According to the eyewitness, when the deceased noticed that it was to was about to rain, they decided to lockup their workshop and go home, but before they could leave the workshop thunder struck .

Police rescue NURTW kidnap victim in royal father’s palace

A National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, member, Bernard Oyeogun, kidnapped, Wednesday, by a rival faction in Agbor, Delta State, has been rescued by the police from the palace of a royal father, (names withheld), where he was unlawfully held for one night.

Saturday Vanguard was informed, yesterday, that the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in the area, who acted on a tip-off, stormed the palace with policemen on Thursday and unchained the victim.

Ex-Gov Segun Agagu is dead

The immediate past governor of Ondo state, Dr. Olusegun Agagu is dead. He was 65.

He reportedly died on Friday at about 8 pm in his Bodija, Ibadan residence 24 hours after returning from a foreign trip, family sources confirmed last night..

The former governor was said to have been hale and hearty as he showed no sign of sickness before he suddenly slumped and died.

Kidnappings in Edo: Gunmen abduct Bini Monarch

In less than 12 hours to the release of Mr. Mike Ozekhome, a senior advocate of Nigeria,  the release of the deputy comptroller customs Mr. Thomas Ashibuogwu,  all abducted in Edo state Nigeria.

Another prominent Edo citizen has also been kidnapped, Mr Patrick Igbinedu, the Iyase (Prime Minister) of Udo, near Benin, was on Wednesday abducted by unknown gunmen. Palace sources  Thursday said that the monarch was abducted by some armed fierce looking young men.

Man Arraigned For Sexually Assaulting Toddler

A 30-year-old man, Adejuwon Adeyemi, on Thursday appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos over alleged sexual assault on a three-year-old girl.

Adeyemi, who resides at No.10, Walter-Endem St., Abule-Egba, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge. The prosecutor, Insp Richard Odigie, told the court that the accused inserted his manhood into the mouth of the toddler on July 25 at 7.30p.m. at his residence.

Nigeria Ranks 4th In Global Oil Supply Outages

Nigeria ranks fourth in the league of countries who contribute to global oil supply outages, estimates from analysts at Deutsche Bank and other shipping and industry sources have shown. This is even as the country loses more than 200,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil to vandalism, crude oil theft and spills.

Total global outages amount to 3.15 million bpd, about 3.5 percent of daily world oil demand of 90 million bpd, according to the estimates.

Nigeria, Africa’s top oil producer, has had to grapple with upsurge in crude oil thefts, resulting in frequent production shutdowns and massive oil leakages in recent time.

Nigeria Has 35m Illiterate Adults – Minister

Couple Convicted Of Starving Adopted Daughter To Death

 A Washington State couple was convicted of starving their adopted Ethiopian daughter to death, Goskagit.com.

Larry and Carri Williams of Sedro-Woolley-area were convicted of all but one of the charges filed against them in the death of teenager Hana Williams and the abuse of an adopted son.

Hana was found starved to death in the back yard of the couple’s home where Hana was forced to live as part of a strict discipline regimen dictated by the couple’s religion.

Court Dissolved Marriage Because Wife Can't Cope With Husband's Smoking Habit

A four-year-old marriage has been dissolved by an Ilorin Area court on Tuesday over the husband’s inability to stop smoking.

Toibat Bello and Kazeem Bello had been married since 2009.

Toibat, 30, a resident of Edun Area, Ilorin, had earlier prayed the court to dissolve her marriage to Kazeem over his ‘uncontrolled smoking habit’ which is worrisome, saying her husband is addicted to smoking.

Four Convicted For Delhi Gang Rape

Four men have been found guilty of the fatal gang rape of a student in the Indian capital Delhi last December.

The 23-year-old woman was brutally assaulted on a bus and died two weeks later.

Her death led to days of huge protests across India in a wave of unprecedented anger.

The case forced the introduction of tough new laws to punish sexual offences. The four men are expected to be sentenced on Wednesday.

23 killed as vehicles crash into collapsed bridge in Katsina

No fewer than 23 persons were feared killed in multiple crashes, when their vehicles plunged into a collapsed bridge at Yar’randa village in Charanchi Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The first crash involved a bus conveying 24 passengers which plunged into the bridge few minutes after its collapse on Monday night.

According to the witness, the bridge collapsed at about 9.30p.m. due to heavy downpour and moments after the bus with registration number XA 328 KZR, conveying passengers from Kano to Katsina, fell into the bridge.

Thief Writes Apology Note, Returns Money For Robbery 11 Years Later

 Keosavanh Xayarath, owner of the InterAsian Market & Deli in Nashville, Tennessee, has never forgotten being robbed at gunpoint more than a decade ago. Recently memories of the crime resurfaced for Keosavanh and his son, Somboon Wu, when the elder owner received a mysterious envelope from a man who entered the store.

Somboon said, “He was really insistent that we take this, that we had to take this.” Eventually the unidentified man told them that the delivery was important because it contained money. Egypt: 9 Killed In Military Offensive In Sinai Peninsula

 Army troops backed by helicopter gunships have attacked hideouts of Islamic militants in Sinai, killing nine and arresting 10, a military official says.

The official’s account on Tuesday raises the death toll among suspected militants to 29 since the start of a major military offensive in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula on Saturday.

The official says explosives material, weapons and ammunition were found on Monday in the villages of el-Mahdiya and Naga Shabana, south of the town of Rafah near the border with Gaza.

He secured a winning majority in the second round.

A former Olympic fencing gold medalist, Bach becomes the ninth president in the 119-year history of the IOC. He is the eighth European to hold the presidency.

Olu Of Warri Retracts Edict Renouncing Ogiame Title

The embattled Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse II on Tuesday afternoon recanted the controversial edict that changed his title and renounced some part of the tradition and culture of the people thereby calming frayed nerves and restoring a semblance of peace to the oil-rich city that erupted in days of protest following the announcement.

The Olu had on September 4, through a royal edict  renounced the “Ogiame” title which had been in existence for over 500 years because according to him, “It connotes our allegiance to Umalokun (goddess of the river) and other deities of the sea, all of which are false gods.”

A 25-year-old pastor, Samson Bamgbose, was, yesterday, arraigned before an Abeokuta Chief Magistrate Court, Isabo, Ogun State for allegedly causing the death of a church member, who drowned during a spiritual bath.

Bamgbose, a pastor at the Celestial Church of Christ, Alaapa, is facing a one-count charge of negligence.

The police prosecutor, Mr Paul Etusi, told the court that the offence was committed on August 15 at 3p.m. in Ogun River, Alaapa village, Abeokuta.

25-Year-Old Man Found Alive Inside A Coffin

Residents of Akenzua Street in Benin City woke up on Monday to find a 25- year old man inside a locked tomb of one Emmanuel Obasogie Obayuwana without any visible signs of break in or entry. The man, who was dressed in red, wore white hand gloves and tied a red cloth on his forehead.

He was found sitting on the grave and stained clothings were found inside a wooden box with him. Some spiritualists and pastors who were invited to pray against whatever evils the man brought were afraid of going inside to bring the man out of the tomb after the first son of the deceased, Isaac, brought the keys.

Porn star's positive HIV test prompts calls for industry shutdown

A US-based porn actor has tested positive for HIV, the third such case reported in less than three weeks, leading a Los Angeles-based trade group for adult filmmakers to call a fresh nationwide moratorium on productions.

17 killed as Boko Haram attack youth vigilante in Borno

At least 17 people died and 18 others seriously injured as suspected Boko Haram terrorists attacked a vigilante group guarding Benisheik Town, 72km west of Maiduguri, victims and government officials said.

The spokesman of the newly formed 7th Division of the Nigerian Army, Lt Col. Sagir Musa, who confirmed the attack, said six vigilante, called ‘Civilian-JTF,’ and five Boko Haram members died.

The terrorists attacked the town, in Kaga Local Government Area, at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday.

3 year-old girl crushed to death during lovers fight

Nigeria Targets 50% Reduction In Wheat Importation

There are plans to distribute about 7,500 improved wheat seeds to farmers in 12 northern states, the Federal Government has said.

Police uncover fake university college hospital in Imo state

A fake doctor and suspected leader of a gang, which specialises in extorting money from candidates seeking admission into higher institutions, has been arrested by the police in Imo State.

Fidelis Chukwujindu of Umudumabiakam Ogboko in Ideato Local Government Area was arrested while conducting entrance examination for 576 victims, who reportedly purchased the admission forms at N8,000 each.

Molue Commercial Buses Banned from Lagos Island

Big commercial buses, known as ‘Molue’, were banned from operating on Lagos Island by the decision of the Lagos State Government.

Man Dragged To Court For Attempting To Rape 9-Yr Old Girl

A 23-year old man, Ohuegbe Vincent, has been arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, for allegedly wanting to have the carnal knowledge of a nine year old girl.

Vincent was, however, said to have assaulted the minor by “giving her a human bite on her right breast.”

The incident occurred on Church Street, in the Ebute Meta area of Lagos.Vincent was arraigned on two counts of assault and attempted rape.

Parliament of Kenya has approved a motion to withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC) after an emergency debate.

A bill to this effect is expected to be introduced in the next 30 days, after opposition MPs boycotted the vote.

ICC has charged President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto with crimes against humanity that stem from violence that followed disputed 2007 elections. Ruto's case is due to start in the Hague next week.

FRSC: Speed Limit Devices To Be Installed In Buses

Safety is above everything that is why the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, is to check that “speed limit devices” are installed in all commercial buses, according to Mr. Osita Chidoka, the Corps Marshal of the commission.

Chidoka stated this on Wednesday at the Second Stakeholders forum on “Speed Limiting Device Enforcement.”

The measure was part of efforts to reduce road traffic accidents, the maiden edition was held in December.

Dozens Hurt As 130 Vehicles Crash

Dozens of people have been injured as more than 130 vehicles were involved in a series of crashes in thick fog on the Sheppey crossing in Kent.

Eight of those hurt in the collisions, which took place at about 07:15 BST, have serious injuries.

Ambulance crews said 27 casualties needed hospital treatment and they dealt with 200 people at the scene.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has filed charges in Germany claiming a US Marines intelligence officer spied on him during a Berlin computer conference four years ago, prosecutors said Wednesday, confirming media reports.

Assange said the spying at the Chaos Computer Club’s 2009 annual congress was made public when the ex-Marine gave witness testimony in June this year in the military trial of WikiLeaks source Bradley Manning, who was later sentenced to 35 years’ jail.

Childhood Diseases Still Major Threat In Africa- World Bank Report

In spite of improving health care delivery system in Africa, more children are likely to death from childhood sicknesses, according to a new report released by the World Bank.

The report noted that “Children in sub-Saharan Africa are now less likely to die from diarrhea and pneumonia, but these illnesses are still the most common causes of childhood death and sickness in most African countries.”

Statistics from the report showed that loss of health due to diarrheal diseases dropped 34% between 1990 and 2010, lower respiratory infections (LRIs) such as pneumonia dropped by 22%, and protein-energy malnutrition was down 17%.

Principal, Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital,Sokoto Demoted Over Refusal To Admit Unqualified Student

For refusing to admit two students with Fake West African Examination Council (WAEC) result, the Principal of the School of Psychiatric Nursing at the Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, Kware, Sokoto State has been demoted to a Bed Side Nurse in the out Patients Department of the hospital.

According to a source who spoke to FrontiersNews, the Assistant has now been promoted as the Principal and the two nurses were offered admission.

Trouble started for the demoted principal, when upon discovering that the result presented by the two students has been tampered with refused to admit them.

Police nabbed robbery gang attempting to smuggle two trucks of drugs

Operatives of  the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja, Lagos have foiled an attempt by an eight-man robbery gang to smuggle two trucks of drugs worth over N20 million from May&Baker company in Oba Akran area of Ikeja.

Surprisingly, two of the suspects were discovered to be guards attached to the company.

Nineteen Traffic Marshals, working for the Gombe State government on Tuesday sustained various degrees of injuries in clashes with a group of policemen in Gombe.

Housewife, Remanded In Prison Custody Over Alleged Murder Of 3-Yr-Old

An Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday remanded a 21-year-old housewife, Rebecca Bassey, in prison custody over alleged murder of a three -year-old girl.

The Magistrate, A.O. Akomolafe, remanded the accused, pending the outcome of an advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Frank Inah, had told the court that the accused committed the crime on July 22 at about 4.00 p.m. at her residence.

Guards help robbers to steal from pharmaceutical firm

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two security guards, Ali Salifu and Eno Kela, with seven others for allegedly robbing pharmaceutical company, May and Baker, in Ikeja Indusrial Estate.

Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, told PUNCH Metro that the arrested guards gave other security men in the company some packs of juice laced with a banned drug, Rohypnol, to make them sleep when the robbery was taking place.

Food And National Security Under Threat - Nigerian Economic Summit Group

The Director General of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), Mr. Frank Nweke Jnr. on Tuesday, September 3, explained during a Channels Television programme why the group chose agriculture as the theme for the 19th Economic Summit holding in Abuja.

To highlight the urgency of the topic, Nweke said Nigeria spends about $5-$10 billion annually on importation of food products. According to estimations, 60 cents of every dollar earned by the country is spent on food importation, he said.
