Nursing Mother Nabbed Attempting To Export Cannabis

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday said that it had arrested a 34-year-old nursing mother (names withheld) for allegedly attempting to export 6 kg. of cannabis to China.

NDLEA Spokesman Mr Mitchell Ofoyeju,  said the suspect was arrested during a routine inspection of cargoes at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

He said that the cannabis was hidden in a luggage meant for export on an Ethiopian Airlines’ flight, adding that illicit drug was discovered at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) shed.

“The suspect allegedly brought a bag for export to China. During a search, 6 kg of compressed cannabis was found inside the bag.

“The bag contains clothing, cell phones, cell phone batteries and shoes.

“She is currently undergoing investigation but she has a choice to be with her baby during the course of investigation,” Mr. Ofoyeju said.

The spokesman said that the suspect claimed in her confessional statement that she was given the bag by a client to send to China.

He said that efforts were underway to identify and apprehend other persons connected with the case, stressing that the suspect would soon be charged to court.

According to the suspect, “I was told that the bag contained sample goods; unfortunately, drug was hidden inside.”
