Senate Berates Prison Service Over Incessant Jail Breaks



Senate committee on Interior, has expressed dismay at the frequency of jail breaks in the country saying it does not augur well for the country's image.

Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Baguda Abubakar, said jail breaks was becoming an embarassment to Nigeria, urging NPS to devIse new ways of putting an end to it.


He stressed the need for Nigeria Prison Services (NPS) to work hard to avoid it been being decentralized.

"If Nigerians mount pressure on the National Assembly, the Senate might consider the decentralization of NPS’s power like it was done to Nigeria Police."

While commiserating with the
management on some of its officers so far lost to the cases of attacked, Mr. Bagudu told the management to always open up to the Senate on their challenges, saying that the upper chamber was ready to assist the agency.

The committee said they were
visiting the Service to know it position on a proposal that Nigeria Prison Service should be removed from exclusive list and taken to concurrent list.

Reacting, the Comptroller General of NPS, Zakari Ibraihim, told the senators that his agency has discovered that they can not tackle the issue of jail breaks alone, and they have resulted to collaboration between other agencies for sharing of
information.

For his part, Deputy Comptroller General, AdminIstration, Peter E. Ekpenelu, warned the committee against removing NPS from exclusive list, saying that the states might misuse the power.
