Two Inspectors with Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were on Monday arrested by men of the FCT Police command for allegedly breaking into Abuja Central Medical Stores, Jabi, and carting away 25 cartons of medical syringes.
According to police report, a staff of the store called the police when she arrived the scene of the crime unnoticed, and found out a robbery was going on.
Policemen from Utako division on surveillance patrol got a distress call and when they arrived the scene, they saw a Toyota Carina car loaded with 25 cartons of syringes.
“Our men accosted a 28-year old Civil Defence Inspector as well as his accomplice, a 42-year-old Inspector. We demanded to know who they were, and they told us that they were Civil Defence staff. We then demanded to know what the cartons were doing in the car and they said they wanted to make money by selling them.
The police source added that immediately they made those confessional statements, they were promptly arrested and taken to the station.
The driver of the Carina said he was deceived by the Civil Defence men as they told him that they were suppliers and they negotiated and agreed that he would be paid N3,000. “I didn’t know they were thieves, if I knew, I would not have carried them or packed those things in my car,” he lamented.
According to the FCT police spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent Hyelhira Altine Daniel, investigation is still ongoing.
Reacting, Mr. Akinbinu David, the spokesperson of FCT NSCDC, confirmed the arrest and warned that no paramilitary organization condones any form of criminality. “Any Civil Defender, who is caught in any criminal act would be dismissed. The two officials of Civil Defense who were arrested by the FCT police would be tried for criminal activities and dismissal is total,” he stated
