TCN Restores Power Supply T0 The North West, Parts Of South South
Power supply has been restored to the Kebbi and Sokoto States including Niamey in Niger Republic, following the construction of a bypass for the transmission towers that collapsed under heavy rainstorm on May, 25th, 2013. The transmission line bypass which was successfully completed and energized on Wednesday, 18th June, 2013, is to serve as a temporary source of power supply to the affected areas pending the completion of four new transmission towers currently being erected.
In a statement signed by the General Manager (Public Affairs), Mr. Dave Ifabiyi, TCN said that the temporary bypass that has bridged the affected portion of the 330kV transmission line from Kainji in Niger State to Birinin Kebbi in Kebbi State is currently wheeling 103MW out of which 60MW is allotted to Niamey, Niger Republic. The speedy construction of the temporary transmission line bypass, the statement explained, was informed by the urgent need to restore power supply to the affected customers whose socio-economic activities were negatively impacted by outage caused by the incident.
According to the statement, the contract for the re-construction of the damaged towers has already been awarded to a TCN contractor, who has mobilized to site and commenced work on the new towers. Reconstruction work, it said, is expected to be completed by the end of July, 2013.
TCN added that the bypass which involved the erection of poles and stringing of the 330kV transmission lines was successfully carried
out through effective collaboration between TCN and NIGELEC engineers of the Republic of Niger. TCN promised to ensure the effective supervision of the firm handling the construction of the new towers which would permanently replace the collapsed towers and assured that it would continue to work hard at enhancing the transmission capacity in the area.
The statement also revealed that emergency re-construction was carried out on the terminal tower along the Ahoda – Yenegoa 132kV Double Circuit line, which collapsed on the 17th of May, 2013, when a very big tree which was outside the transmission right of way fell on the line. The re-construction of the tower and double circuit line was also carried out by TCN contractors.
TCN said one of the double circuit lines was energized on the 1st of June, while the second line was energized on the 7th of June 2013.
The company sincerely thanked its esteemed customers in the North West and South South of the country as well as the Niger Republic, for their understanding and co-operation through the period of both incidents.
