Political Parties, Police, Legislature Lead Corruption Index In Nigeria
A new survey by global anti-corruption watchdog, Transparency International, indicates that political parties, police, legislators, public officials and civil servants, and the judiciary are extremely corrupt.
The latest report shows that 94 percent of respondents in Nigeria feel that political parties are corrupt, followed by the police (92 percent).
The National Assembly is believed by 73 percent of the respondents to be corrupt, while 69 percent said public officials and civil servants are corrupt. Majority of the Nigerians surveyed believe that government’s actions in the fight against corruption were very ineffective, adding that corruption was a serious problem in the public sector. Corruption was said to have increased significantly over the past two years, with 66 percent of respondents feeling that the judiciary was corrupt.
According to the report, tagged ‘Global Corruption Barometer 2013′, 54 percent of respondents feel that the education systems is corrupt, followed by the military (45 percent), business and medical and health services (41 percent).
The media was said to be corrupt by 33 percent of respondents in Nigeria while 32 percent accused non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The survey shows that 24 percent of respondents feel that religious bodies are also corrupt.
