18 Feared Dead In Benin Multiple Car Crash

Eighteen persons are feared dead from a multiple vehicle accident that occurred at the take-off point of the Benin—Ore—Lagos Expressway in the early hours of Thursday.

A witness said the vehicles that were involved in the accident included a rickety truck carrying beverage drinks, another truck loaded with sand, and an 18-seater commercial bus filled with passengers.

The witness said the beverage truck driver lost control of the vehicle before it veered off its lane into a head-on collision with the sand truck.

The bus, moving at top speed behind the sand truck, ran into the accident from behind.

Fifteen of the passengers in the commercial vehicle and three in the sand truck reportedly died from the accident; while three others sustained various degrees of injury.

Many of the victims reportedly died on their way to the hospital

The Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, John Aniedi, confirmed that six people died in the accident while others, severely injured, were taken to the commission’s clinic, located at Oregbeni Quarters in Ikpoba Hill, Benin City, for treatment.

Mr. Aniedi remarked, however, that he was yet to get an update on the casualty figure.
