Nigerian Military says at least 20 people were said to have died and over 10 more injured when people suspected to be members of the dreaded Boko Haram Islamist group opened fire on a vigilante group in Borno State.
According to a statement by the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and signed by its spokesman, Mr. Haruna Mohammed Sanni, the incident occurred when the Civilian Joint Task Force entered Dawashe to search for suspects.
Suspected Boko Haram members subsequently opened fire in the village adding that tmost of them were fishermen and traders.
“The suspected sect members came armed and fired sporadic shots that killed over twenty innocent civilians.
The violence took place on Saturday in Dawashe village, the army lieutenant said in a statement.
Civilian Joint Task Force, a vigilante group in Borno has been helping JTF in the fight to flush out the Islamists.
The MNJTF, a joint military force set up in 1998 to combat border crimes, consists of troops from Nigeria, Chad and Niger.
Over 3600 people are said to have died from the activities of Boko Haram, insurgent since 2009.
