Man Drowns While Evading Police Arrest In Delta

A yet-to-be-identified middle-aged man has drowned while allegedly evading police arrest during a raid on an Indian hemp smoking joint in Ashaka, Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State.

It was gathered that the police, acting on a tip-off that smokers converged on the spot to indulge in the unwholesome act, consequently swooped on them.

But on sighting the police, the alleged smokers whose number could not be ascertained, dispersed to avoid being arrested. Sources told Daily Sun that policemen gave the suspects a hot chase and while closing-in on the middle-aged man, he allegedly jumped into the river and drowned, apparently due to lack of ability to swim. The situation, however, caused a stir in the area as a mob of about 200 persons stormed Ashaka Police Station, throwing stones at the building and policemen on duty.

The mob action allegedly led to the destruction of windows and the charge room while the rear glasses of patrol vehicles of Ashaka and Aboh police divisions parked at the premises were shattered. It took combined efforts of Dragon 24, 25 and 26 patrol teams in synergy with military officials from Agip Oil Company to bring the chaotic situation under control.

Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Mr Lucky Uyabeme, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP),who confirmed the incident in Asaba, stated that, “one Emeka and other principal suspects have been arrested while manhunt for the fleeing suspects is on.” According to him, the command would not “tolerate attack on police facilities for any reason.

Raiding of criminal hideouts is a normal police action aimed at checkmating criminals. Similar raids were recently carried out behind Abraka and cattle markets in Asaba and other divisions.”

Uyabeme further confirmed the arrest of two persons including Udwin and Eto both males of Etiagbodo village in Olomoro clan for unlawful possession of arms while riding a cargo motorcycle.

He said one locally made single barrel gun with four cartridges, one cutlass, two torch lights, one helmet and the cargo motorcycle with registration number QH 398 LEH were recovered from the suspects.
