Oil Thieves Responsible For Cove Jetty Explosion, NEMA Says

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said the fire incident near the Atlas Cove jetty in Lagos came from a pipeline explosion caused by oil thieves at Akinbo jetty.

NEMA spokesperson, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, for the South West, through a text message Wednesday debunked earlier report that claimed the explosion was a barge carrying gasoline.

He said his crew members have now put out the fire and recovered 200 jerry cans in three boats completely razed by the fire.

Nema had earlier reported that a vessel carrying imported gasoline has exploded in Lagos killing and injuring yet- to- be determined number of people.

The emergency agency said the explosion occurred around 1 am Nigerian time at the Atlas Cove jetty in

Apapa area of Lagos. The raging fire is still ongoing as at 10 AM as firefighters and the NNPC battle to shut down pipes at the jetty
