NEMA Warns Of Impending Cholera Outbreak In Kebbi

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has warned of a looming outbreak of epidemic in Kebbi State and other parts of the North-west zone.

At a one day seminar titled, “Epidemics with teachers, district heads and health workers at local level” in Birnin Kebbi.

The NEMA’s Zonal coordinator, North-West zone, Mr. Musa Ilallah, said on Friday in Birnin-Kebbi that the coming rains and floods create conditions for diseases to spread faster and further in affected communities.

Mr. Ilallah therefore called for urgent action in critical areas to help stop the spread of these diseases, especially cholera which has infected and killed thousands of people in the country.

The Zonal Coordinator said, “In many villages, sanitation is often compromised during the rainy season, allowing wastes to contaminate communal wells.”

He said the looming epidemic if not checked will spread through food and water contaminated with bacteria, adding that the workshop is part of the agency’s efforts to mitigate disaster in the country.
