Houses Flooded In Abakaliki As River Overflows Banks

Scores of people in Abakiliki have been sacked from their houses and properties worth millions of Naira destroyed following a heavy downpour which led to the Iyiudene River overflowing its bank.

Reports say the rain started at about 1a.m on Thursday morning and lasted for five hours.

The flood also said to have hindered the free flow of traffic on Works Road in the town

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) had predicted heavy flooding during the year.

The agencies had warned people living along flood-prone areas to relocate to higher grounds to minimise losses.

Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr Umunna Igboke, said an assessment team who visit the affected areas see the extent of damage.

”This morning my office received the news of the overflow of the Iyiudene River and the devastations it had caused.

“We are making arrangement to dispatch our assessment team to the affected area before we will be able to make informed statement on the flood disaster,” he said.

Ebonyi was one of the states badly hit by the 2012 flood disaster, which destroyed farmlands, residential buildings and livestock.
